“I started coming to family group in my search for a way to cope with a family member’s addiction. I didn’t know what to expect and wasn’t sure if it was for me. It was. I learned all about addiction and my choices pertaining to the addiction. Mike helped me set and manage boundaries. I slowly learned how to stop enabling. Mike has been very open in sharing his experiences. He has helped me more than any therapist, book or Nar-Anon meeting. Being able to talk to someone who has been thru addiction and has made it to the other side has been key for me. I have also met some great people in my same situation. We share our issues, wins and stories each week. We support each other with no judgment. I can ask Mike all my questions and get real honest answers/advice (no sugar coating here). This group has helped me maintain balance in my life and I am extremely grateful.”
“I came to these family meetings to get step by step instructions on how I could fix my son’s addiction. What I learned was I didn't cause his addiction, I can't control it, and I can't correct it. That's up to him. I knew we were not the only parents in this position, but at the meetings you can actually see others, talk to them and more importantly, listen to them as they discuss their paths and how much it corresponds to your own. What worked and what didn’t work. These are not just free complaining sessions to blow off steam, they are at the direction of Mike, our counselor. He guides us with his insight and experience from over 20 years of working with addicts. We are now aware of some pitfalls to avoid and signs to watch out for. Most of all we learned not to help him further his addiction. We need to have the patience to allow him to come to realize he has a problem and to take steps to fix it.”
