LGBTQIA+ Outpatient Services
At Maryville Integrated Care, we tailor care to our clients’ unique needs. Recognizing that our LGBTQIA+ community is at higher risk of addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders, we have developed specialized outpatient programming to help.
Why LGBTQIA+-Specific Treatment Matters
LGBTQIA+ people face social pressures and discrimination that can worsen or trigger substance use and mental health issues. The difference between the rates of substance use disorders in the LGBTQIA+ community versus the general population highlights the need for compassionate support.
These statistics from SAMHSA shed light on the situation:20 to 30% of those in the LGBTQIA+ community abuse alcohol or drugs, compared to 9% of the general population.
- 20 to 30% of those in the LGBTQIA+ community abuse alcohol or drugs, compared to 9% of the general population.
- 9 million LGBTQIA+ Americans have a dual diagnosis of substance abuse and a mental health disorder.
- 8% of LGBTQIA+ people with co-occurring disorders do not get help, often due to fear of prejudice or negative experiences with health providers.
What Maryville Offers for Our LGBTQIA+ Community
Our Turnersville Outpatient site, accessible in person and via telehealth, has become a haven for LGBTQIA+ clients. Led by queer and trans people, our program offers the following benefits.
- Individual and group counseling: By participating in individual and group therapy geared toward LGBTQIA+-specific issues, you can talk about your experiences, challenges and needs in a judgment-free environment.
- Peer recovery support services: You will have access to an LGBTQIA+-identifying mentor who supports you throughout your recovery and helps you navigate any barriers you may face. They can help with things such as obtaining your driver’s license or finding appropriate housing.
- Transportation coordination: We help remove logistical hurdles by arranging transportation to and from treatment if needed.
- Mental health services: We have a licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner on staff to conduct psychiatric evaluations and determine the best course of action for your specific needs.
- Medication management: Medication can play a role in improving most mental health conditions. If medication is part of your journey, we have licensed health professionals dedicated to ensuring that you are on the correct medication regimen to support your mental health.
- Medication-assisted treatment: We can administer FDA-approved medications to manage alcohol and drug withdrawal symptoms and cravings. This approach has proven safe and effective in combination with therapy.
- Connections to the LGBTQIA+ community: For LGBTQIA+-identifying people, having a sense of community is key to continued success. Our staff works tirelessly to connect our clients to LGBTQIA+ safe spaces. We even offer monthly social gatherings to help bridge this gap. Referrals to affirming health care providers in the area is also an integral part of our work.
